The leather vest has long been a staple of popular fashion. Many movie actors have worn vests as part of their costumes; after all, it's hard to imagine a cowboy or motorcyclist without one. While perhaps not the first item in today's wardrobe, the vest has certainly come a long way.
Animal skin, or hide, is processed into a sturdy material that can be sewn into clothing through a process called tanning. Tanning is a not a new invention, it has been used before today by Native American, before them by Medieval Europeans, and for quite a while before them too.
Today, most people wear leather shoes, coats, and jackets. Because leather is stronger than and more durable than cloth, it is a useful material. Today, many synthetic materials surpass leather in quality, but during the time of the Wild West, this was not the case.
One piece of historical garment is the leather vest. From the time of the sheriff with the tin star pinned to his vest, to the gang of motorcyclists with long hair, without shirts, only in vests striding in to the bar after parking their big motorcycles out side. Vests have been apart of our American culture.
Importantly to note, vests are not really essential clothing items. Jackets are more functional in offering protection from the elements. Vests on males serve almost entirely as decoration, to fit into a particular group. This is similar to women who wear jewelry to show off their personality, or to show their position in society.
Leather is a luxurious item. It is often pricey. It also can take a beating and lasts a long time. A vest made out of leather can be a treasured object. Through out history it has clothed many. This is evident in its use today in movies to fulfill a character. If you want to jazz up your wardrobe a little, try finding a leather vest that you identify with.
From cowboys to riders of motorcycles to movie characters, the leather vest has become a popular, if unnecessary wardrobe item. It is much like jewelry on a woman; a symbol of wealth and social status. Leather is made by tanning, a technique pioneered by American Indians and dark age Europeans. Leather can also come in the form of shoes, jackets and coats. Leather is considerably stronger than cloth and is usually a costly extravagance. The advantage is that it can provide the wearer better protection and so is definitely worth the price.
